Sugarland Tri
I went out today and raced the Sugarland Tri to get an idea of my current fitness level. It was a 300m swim in the pool, 10 mile bike, and a 5k run. I had never done a pool swim and thought that it would take away from the actual triathlon feel, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. The whole race was just one big hammer fest. Going into the race I knew that my swim was feeling like the weakest of the 3 sports, but with only 300m I was able to bluff my way through it. Coming in off the bike I had one of my first spills on the bike. As I came into T2, I was going way to fast and when I tried to slow down, my foot slipped off my shoe, and down I went. The bike went up in the air, but luckily one of the volunteers were right there and caught it mid-air (so no scratches). I managed to only get a few scrapes. On the run, my legs felt heavy. Too heavy. I was able to put 30 seconds on the closest competitor, Bradley Piagie, to take the overall. It felt good to have the win, but I was actually disappointed with my results. It's hard to fully judge my fitness with such a short race, but I can tell that my swim and run are where I should be focusing. The bike split was good, but I want to know if I could carry that speed over to an Olympic tri. Next week I am doing a 35m mile TT in LA, which will help me judge that. I have another month of mostly training, before I start racing more often. So July will be a big training month. I'd be open to advice on how to improve my turnover for a quicker run and swim tips on how to bring down my 1500 swim time. Thanks. FYI looking at getting a coach for the next year, will find out later this week if we are going to make it happen.
