Chappell Hill Road Race and other close encounters

This weekend was a crazy blur. It all started well with a fun date night on Friday. Saturday is where everything got crazy. After a great morning run at Memorial Park, I was on my way to swim practice when the person in front of me stopped suddenly. So I stop suddenly, then the car behind me slams into the back of my car pushing me into the car in front of me. Then another car behind them slams into them. Before I know it I am in a 5 car collision on 6-10. Luckily everyone was ok, and amazingly I was able to drive my car home, although it looked like a crushed tin can. I don’t know if I was more upset that I was in the car accident or that I missed swim practice.

That night we packed up sarah’s mustang w/my bike, two bags of laundry, and my backpack (don’t ask me how we managed to cram it all in there) and headed out to Katy. The next morning I headed out to Chappell Hill to race the Cat 5a road race. I had been given the advice from Adam at ATC to just take off at mile 30. So at mile 30 I got a slight lead out and a hill. I attacked hard up the hill and dropped the pack. For the next 20 miles it was an all out time trial to the finish line. At one point I built up a 1:15 lead, but as we turned back towards town there was a strong headwind where I lost ground. At 5 miles to the finish line my lead was down to 45 seconds. I just put my head down and kept spinning my legs until I made it across the finish line only 22 seconds in front of the pack! I was pumped. This was my first road race win. Hopefully now I can cat up to a category 4. I also want to say congrats to the ATC Women's Cat 4 team. Good job out there, I know it must have been hot. After the race I did the typical triathlete at a road race thing and went for a run. Then it was time to head back home for a big lunch and a nap. In the end, it turned out to be a good weekend.
